DORIS - 2003

DORIS’ HISTORY 2003

JANUARY
Carolyn has reminded me to write my history for 2003.  We had spent an enjoyable New Years Eve with Phyllis, Rick, Rickell, Jerda, Kirk, Maureen, Mark, Valerie, Eric, Valleen & Rob at Kristen’s house for dinner.  Jim put my 30 Christmas boxes up in the attic after I sadly packed them for another year.

Now, some of us were planning for the exciting trip to Dale and LeAnn’s in Maryland in March.  Kristen was called to serve in the Young Women’s Presidency.  I pondered the blessing it is for all the children to have temple recommends and callings in their wards, all having Temple marriages.  Carolyn celebrated her 58th birthday.  I’m beginning to feel old!  79 years.
McKay was coming down each evening to read to me for her homework.  I love hearing her sound out those big words.  A goal for this year was to read the four Standard works, one chapter or section in the Book of Mormon, D&C, Pearl of Great Price, and 3 or 4 pages in the Bible each day to finish by Christmas.

On Jan 16th, Jim took Kristen to the hospital because of terrible pain from bowel blockage.  She stayed overnight.  Carl continued to write every week, letters of love and appreciation, and money each month.  I was going with Kristen each Tuesday and Friday to houseclean for which she gets paid well.  I began crocheting a temple envelop for all the girls, and for all the granddaughters.

FEBRUARY
Kristen was hospitalized again because of bad pain.  Laree sent me three pretty slack outfits for our Maryland trip.  Maureen and I were attending the temple every month.  Janie and her children came to visit, staying at the Hesses.

Maureen took me to the four hour “Gods and Generals” movie.  Civil War History.  We enjoyed it. I gave the RS lesson on “The Purpose of Tithes and Offerings”.  On February 24th, I had eye surgery for a cataract - very easy and painless.

I had DUP at my house, still being Camp Captain.  Kristen now was still bothered with pain and headaches.  I helped her as much as she would allow.

MARCH
I visited my good friend Muriel Clark, 91 years old.  Kristen had surgery on March 5th.  I enjoyed sitting with Deona and her mother for Stake Women’s Conference and luncheon.

7 Carl sent my love story “A Cherished Gift” to an author, by request.  Carl had written it well, and we read it on the internet.  It is about the Christmas corsage Maurice bought me in 1944, and I still display it every Christmas.

I attended Laney’s school concert.  She sang a little duet with her friend.  In the news was the return home of kidnaped Elizabeth Smart, young girl of a Mormon family in Salt Lake.  David and girlfriend Sabrina and Chris came from N.D. to visit.

M History books will tell of the dreaded US war in Iraq.  We watched the TV account and President Bush’s warning speech.

I packed to go to Maryland.  It seemed too good to be true.  All of us on the same plane, including Laree in Minneapolis.  Myself, Maureen, Laree, Carolyn, Kanda, Andrew, Phyllis, Rickell, Kristen.  At Dale’s house would be Dale, LeAnn, Allen, Kristie, Sarah, Matthew, Mark & Nathan.  We arrived in Maryland and went to Fort McHenry and were able to help 28 others fold the huge display flag and hear the Francis Scott Key history of the writing of the “Star Spangled Banner”.  Allen came home from college at the University of Maryland to help with his grandma and Aunts.I will list the activities, too many to write in detail.

There were ten meals we all helped with.  What a wonderful time we had! We had enjoyed their lovely home on Planters Lane in Keedysville.  We arrive home on March 29th.

APRIL
Carl and Laree came and Laree went to California with her sister Marsha, and Carl was to attend his mission reunion, so he invited me to ride to Sandy with him, where I stayed at Phyllis; and slept in Rickell’s attractive bedroom.  We visited at Michaels and Carolyns.

Back home here, we watched General Conference.  It was enjoyable to have Carl and listen to the good time he had at his reunion.

M One day we watched Iraq citizens destroying the statute of Saddam Hussein.  War news can be seen constantly.  Kristen and I were elected Treasurer and Chaplain of the Company DUP.  Kristen and I spent many hours on yard work.    Inez Nalder requested that I crochet 10 handkerchief edges.  Although I protested, she paid me well.
On April 19, we had Make-it-take-it here.  In the evening we all went up to Kirk Judy’s grandfather’s ranch for a picnic.Rickelltook me on a 4 wheeler up the mountain.  Jason took Angie for a ride and gave her the engagement ring.  We are all pleased for them.  At this time, I was attending the Singles Home Evening on the first Monday of each month.  On April 27th, Barry Hanson was sustained as the Bishop of our Ward.  We are pleased.

I had DUP meeting at my house this month.  Kristen had written and directed the ward skit for the Stake Road Show.  She based it on Pres. Hinckley’s “B’s”.  It was fun to watch, had a good message.  I went to see Laney and McKay’s dance rehearsal as I will be at Carl’s for the recital.

MAY
I flew from Idaho Falls to Grand Forks.  Laree had prepared a lovely room for me.  WE attended Stake Conference in Fargo and stayed overnight.  Carl as Stake Presidency Counselor spoke and conducted a meeting.  The visiting General Authority had much praise for the Presidency.  Laree and Janie had prepared a lovely meal for the visiting authorities and Stake Officers.  One day, Carl took me to Devil’s Lake to see the tiny Branch Chapel.  Tiny rooms and I loved seeing it.  All the children called and sent gifts for Mother’s Day.  I went with Carl to Fargo where he spoke at a Missionary Zone Meeting.  At the Stake Women’s Conference in Fargo, President Hendrickson requested that I speak a few minutes, to bear my testimony.  Laree taught an inspiring lesson on “Empty Nest Motherhood.”  I went with Carl to Detroit Lake, where he was the speaker at the meeting.  He then drove around the Lake shore to see the beautiful homes.  One evening we met friends, Randy and Patty Olson for lunch.  I was pleased to see the house Janie and Jeremy were planning to buy in Reynolds a few miles from Grand Forks.  Carl and I went to have lunch with Laree at her work and tell her goodbye.  I had such a lovely time with them and Janie, Chris and David at their spiritual household.  We laughed that I watched 20 movies on TV in the evenings and while they were at work.  I was then pleased that I had my lovely home to come back to.

On May 24th, we went again to the Judy Ranch for dinner, cooked by Rick.  We took flowers to the cemetery on Memorial Day.  One day, Maureen, Bryan and Josh took me in a jeep to the top of the Big Butte out west on the desert.  I loved the ride and the surprise of seeing the canyon and forest within the Butte.  We all went to Blackfoot to Josh’s graduation exercises.  I was pleased that he’s an Honor Student.  Mary had her baby boy, Jude. (Gang of 4) Maureen, Kris, Laney, McKay and I went to Sandy to join in the plan of Maureen making Angie’s wedding dress.  We also saw the cute Indian baby.

JUNE
On June 7th, Kanda and Roy’s John was born.(Gang of 4)    Maureen, for the 8th year, chaperoned school students to California.  I gave a demonstration on making freezer jams in Relief Society.

I attended my 62nd class Reunion at North’s Restaurant - so few of us left now, and we all looked old.

I gave the RS lesson on “The Sabbath is a Holy Day” then we went down to Wapello to Josh’s Court of Honor.  Maureen, Bryan, Jason and Josh all spoke, and Jason’s fiancee, Angie, played a piano solo.  Maureen and Josh left to drive to Florida where Josh would spend the summer working for Jan and Heather.  We attended Laney and McKay’s softball games several times during the summer.
I reluctantly purchased hearing aids.  Because Jerda works for that doctor, I got them half price.  I didn’t have to say “what” so often.  Phyllis and girls came and we all went up to Jerda’s baby shower.  Kris and I helped a little with Angie’s wedding dress that Maureen made.  Maureen returned from Florida and on June 27th, Carl came and picked Maureen and me up to go to Sandy.

Kristen’s family also went and we had a baby shower at Phyllis’ house for the new babies, Mary’s Jude and Kanda’s John, as well as the upcoming babies of Marisa and Jerda.

Jim took Kristen to the hospital because of terrible pain.  She stayed overnight.  I got so depressed when we was ill.

Michael and Marisa had a baby girl on June 30th, Maya.(Gang of 4)

JULY
Carolyn, Von, Fred, Mary and Jude came for July 4th and we went to watch the fireworks in Idaho Falls and had dinner at Nelsons, Jim’s parents.  I went with Carolyn and Von and all the Nelsons up to beautiful Star Valley.  Along with Valerie’s mother we had a picnic up in the mountains.
Allen got his Mission call to California.  I’m so pleased!  Kristen went to Young Women Girl’s Camp and Rickell took Laney and McKay to Sandy.  I got a nice check from Mormon Handicraft for $212.00 for an afghan, baby shawl, booties and bookmarks.  I rode with Kristen and Jim to Malad to pick up Laney and McKay (the “Malad Drop off.”) where Rickell had brought them.

One day we cleaned up Kristen and Jim’s camping trailer.  Jim was at work and Kristen and the children wanted to sleep in it.  The dog was barking so they checked and saw a man in the driveway.  When discovered he ran out of the yard.  We were frightened and Kristen called the police.  They came right out and stayed and watched for a while till we felt safe, but didn’t see him.

Phyllis and Rick came and stayed with me, awaiting the birth of Jerda’s baby.  Kaleb was born on July 22. (Gang of 4)

We were having the continued drought and 100 degree weather.  Kristen had to be in the hospital again with infection and pain.  Rickell and I took the little children to the Primary Pioneer Day Parade.  Kristen, Laney, McKay, Maureen, Robyn and I went to Blackfoot for Angie’s shower.  Then I went with Maureen to Ucon for another shower for Angie.

Phyllis and Rick came to attend the funeral of a friend who was killed climbing the Tetons.

AUGUST
Chris came from N.D. to attend Jason’s wedding.  Jason’s wedding day.  Von and Carolyn came and brought the cake Von had made.  We all attended the Temple wedding and a luncheon afterward.  The wedding was lovely and we were all pleased with the new bride.  On Saturday, I went with the family up to Star Valley and with some of Valerie’s family and attended a concert at the Fair Grounds.  We all celebrated Valerie’s mother, Delsa’s 80th birthday.

Phyllis and Rick came and also Heather, Jan and Children and Maureen’s family.  We all went up with Kirk and Jerda to Kirk’s grandfather’s mountain ranch, above Ammon.  Maureen and I went to Salt Lake to get Allen, as he was to spend a week with us and his grandparents in Bountiful.  Maureen, Allen and I went to the Temple for a session and had lunch there.  Kristen’s family and Jerda, Kirk, Kaleb, Maureen and Allen went down to Lava Hot Springs for swimming and a picnic.  I remembered our youthful days when Maurice and I and friends went down there occasionally.  Allen and I went with Phyllis’ family to Pierre’s Playhouse in Victor.

Carolyn, Kanda, Roy and babies came and we all went for the blessing of Kaleb, at Ammon church.  Allen went back with them to visit his grandparents.  We attended Trent’s and Nick’s football games in the summer.  I gave the RS Lesson, “Doing our Best for the Lord.”

Michael, Marisa, Reece and Maya came to visit a day.

SEPTEMBER
Carl and Laree came, and Maureen and I went down with them for the blessing of Maya, Michael & Marisa’s new baby.  Carolyn and I and Andrew went to the aviary at Liberty Park in SL.  Andrew is a darling, handsome little boy.   Carl, Laree and I picked up Allen at the airport.  At Carolyn’s, we had a party for him.

On the way to taking Allen, to the M.T.C we met his grandparents, Edie and Bill Allen at I Hop Restaurant for breakfast.  Then we attended the meeting and said goodbye.  He’s such a nice, good person, will be a great missionary.  I’m pleased.

Back at home, we enjoyed Carl and Laree’s visit for two days.  Carl repaired some things for me, and Laree helped Kristen paint the play room.

Maureen and I went to Sandy, and we and Dale and Carolyn started out on our much anticipated and fun trip to Southern Utah.  We drove around Beaver, and found Adah’s home - such memories!  We visited a museum at Cedar City.  At Ivins, Utah, we toured the location of the Mountain Meadow
massacre.

In St George we got a motel that overlooked the beautiful city and temple.  (Dale slept on the balcony).  We saw “Unsinkable Molly Brown” at fascinating outdoor theater - The Tuachan; also enjoyed barbecue dinner.  We viewed the dinosaur tracks at a forthcoming museum.  We hiked around the rim of Bryce Canyon, then were served lunch by Roys parents, who were visiting there in their trailer.   We went to Monroe were I was born and found the old sugar factory, and the boarding house we lived in for a short time prior to moving to Idaho.

We returned to Sandy, having a most wonderful trip.  I stayed at Phyllis a few days while Dale attended meetings regarding his work.  We invited me to go with him to the dinner at the Smith building, he being in charge of organizing and conducting and speaking.  I was so proud of him.

Dale and I went to Orem to visit Walt and Leona.  One day Carolyn, Fred, Mary, Jude and I went down to Thanksgiving Point at Lehi.  What a wonderful trip we had.  So many good memories!

Dale left for home, and Maureen went to Shayne’s in Iowa.  Carolyn and Von brought me to Malad where Kristen picked me up to come to my lovely home.
   OCTOBER
Fall had arrived - it used to be my favorite season when Maurice was here, and the harvest over.  David came and we went to Utah to General Conference in the big Conference Center.  What a privilege to be there with the choir and General Authorities and with David.
Now back home, the children in spite of my protesting had an open house party for my 80th birthday.  Kristen sent my picture to the Post Register and Pioneer.  Many came, family and ward friends.  The children made the day happy and special.  They are all so good to me.
At the end of Trent and Nick’s football season, we went to a restaurant to celebrate.  We Daughters of Utah Pioneers began our next season of meetings and activities.  I was Captain for the coming year again.  McKay, remembering that she had put little wild daisies in Maurices casket, picked some more and said “they’re still alive because Grandpa’s love is watering them.”

We attended the Ward Halloween Trunk or Treat and got treats from car trunks parked at the church.  Kristen painted my hair striped orange and Bishop Hanson teased about it in Sacrament meeting.

NOVEMBER
We were all happy for Chris, being engaged to wonderful Liza.  Kristen was called to be Primary President.  I said “Doesn’t the Bishop know how often you are sick?”  And she said “Heavenly Father Knows.”   Jerda took me to Malad “the “Malad Drop off”) where Rick met us to take me to Sandy so I could go to Dale’s for Thanksgiving.  List of Activities:

At home, Kristen helped put up my tree.  I changed decorations with gold rings and beautiful ribbon.
I went with Maureen and Bryan to Sandy.  It was fun to see Carolyn and Phyllis’
houses decorated for Christmas.   Dale sent me $300.00 and said “Get something cool.”  So I treated us to ice cream (ha) and spent it on Christmas gifts.  Janie and family came to spend Christmas in Shelley, staying at Hesses.  They came out Christmas Eve and we ladies, Maureen, Jerda, Kristen and I performed a lovely musical program - the men read the speaking parts -  Janie and written and played the piano. All of the cute children presented the Nativity in costumes.

Kristen’s children performed in the beautiful stake concert.  Maureen, Bryan and Lara spent Christmas Eve and day with us.  All my children called and gave me lovely gifts.  They are all so good to me.  I’m so blessed in so many ways.
